In August of 2009, Kate Adams participated in the Police and Fire World Games in Vancouver, Canada. The games were held over a two week period and over 10,000 police and fire personnel participated. When you add the friends and family who traveled with each athlete--you can imagine the huge attendance. There were so many people attending the Games, Canada set up a separate Border entrance for athletes and their families--making it a faster and positive experience.

The process of traveling to another country was facilitated by the Police and Fire World Games Federation's website that detailed travel, host hotels, excursions and site information regarding competition. Athletes were given free public transportation passes and numerous discounts at area attractions and restaurants. Prior to going, TEAM USA sent information regarding team jackets, uniforms etc.--although they are not mandatory.

The opening ceremonies were outstanding. Athletes began the games by marching on the streets of Vancouver. The streets were lined with Canadian Citizens welcoming each athlete. Each country marched together (agencies did not matter- you represented the USA). It was extremely heartwarming for Kate to witness the positive vibe.

The march concluded at an arena (similar to ARCO) where each country was introduced. The opening ceremonies were magnificent and beautiful. The USA was second in attendance only to Canada. There were over 2,500 American athletes in attendance.

During Kate’s competition (swimming), she raced against women from Hong Kong, Russia, Singapore, Germany--you name it. Kate heard many different languages being spoken at the starting blocks, which was both interesting and enlightening. Kate realized how small our department really was compared to the rest of the world.

The games are held every two years and Kate encourages everyone to attend. The experience was extraordinary and for those who have competed in the Western States Games--the World Games outshine them hands down. The competition is fiercer and the caliber of athletes in attendance is phenomenal. Yet, despite the high level of expertise, good sportsmanship is in full effect and poor behavior is not tolerated by the federation.

The next games are 2011 in New York. This will be the ten year anniversary of 9/11 and New York plans on making the games the best ever. They expect over 12,000 participants in 2011! Hotel deals will be good and it is very much a family event. Kate received her medals with her daughters standing on the podium next to her.

Adams competed in the Santa Clarita Police and Fire Games where she won the following Gold medals in swimming:
50 Butterfly GOLD, New Record
50 Backstroke, GOLD New Record
50 Free, GOLD, New Record

Events and gold medals from the World Police and Fire Games in Vancouver, Canada:
